DHHproud – Showcase, April 11th and Friendship Day April 12th, 2022

On April 11th and 12th 2022, POPDHH hosted the inaugural provincial event for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, dubbed DHHproud.
The event kicked off with a new series of contests, called “DHHproud-Showcase” and featured DE’VIA (Deaf Image Art), ASL Poetry, and Spotlight communication competition.
The second day of the event, we had a special guest presenter – Justin Perez, a Deaf performer with a flair for Visual Vernacular.

Before you read more, we would like to ask you to provide a very short feedback about the event – only 4 questions! You can add your comments even if you didn’t attend.

April 11th, DHHproud – Showcase: This year’s theme was ” What makes me proud to be Deaf or Hard of Hearing?” Nearly 80 students across the province entered the competition. First, we had the pleasure of hearing the opening remarks from Jen Mezei, the Chair of the Burnaby Board of Education, and then the contest commenced with ASL poetry, students in Grades 6 – 12. The second half of the event featured speeches, both ASL and Oral. The ASL Poetry K-5 and DE’VIA winners were determined prior to the live event. For a full list of prizes, you can visit our website.

And now we would like to announce the winners:

Congratulations to the winners and all participants; we hope to see many of you next year again!

Some of the participants, organizers and judges joined us for a quick virtual photo shoot.
