We are pleased to announce the dates for the next Outward Bound Canada/POPDHH Wilderness Expedition: September 29th to October 5th, 2024.

The pilot collaboration was completed in October 2023: AN EMPOWERING BACKCOUNTRY ADVENTURE FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING YOUTH IN BC’S GARIBALDI PROVINCIAL PARK

Who: 8 DHH high school students (in grades 10, 11 and 12 in the Fall of 2024) from across BC and BCSD
When: September 29th to October 5th, 2024
Where: Garibaldi Provincial Park
What: A 7 day land adventure – Backpacking and Expedition Camping

Who may apply?

• Students are available Sunday, September 29th – Saturday, October 5th, 2024
• Students would benefit from being in a Deaf, ASL environment
• Students would benefit from leadership opportunities
• Students are comfortable with physically demanding activities, outdoor terrain, sleeping in tents
• Students are comfortable with being away from their families for 7 days
• Students are expected to make arrangements for missed school work with their teachers.
• Parents are required to participate in the online registration process, be available for follow up interviews with the OBC, and be involved in communication prior to the trip.
• Priority will be given to students who apply for the first time but repeat attendees are welcome to apply.
• Students will provide their own hiking boots and personal items. All specialized equipment will be provided by OBC

*Please note that listening devices may run out of battery power during the expedition. Students will have access to ASL and interpreters to aid in communication.

OBC/POPDHH 2024 Registration Form

Deadline to apply is April 1st, 2024. All candidates must have their district’s field trip protocols in place.

Once the applications are received, POPDHH will contact the applicants and their TDHHs to set up a 5 minute interview in ASL (to introduce themselves and tell us a little about their interest in the expedition).

Final round of applicants will be confirmed after the interviews are conducted, by April 15th, 2024.

Eight lucky candidates, their parents and teachers will be advised of the next steps in the first week of May 2024.
