The DRAFT Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) outlines concepts and skills that require specialized instruction with students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). Building goals in these areas allows students to learn, advocate, and compensate for accessibility.  

This resource is meant to guide teachers, administrators, and school districts in understanding the needs of students who are DHH.  These are skills that students who are DHH will need direct and explicit instruction above and beyond the BC curriculum and core competencies. Students require specialized tools and strategies delivered through direct instruction and collaborative support from a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  This curriculum is meant to be a guide though not every goal may be applicable for every student. The ECC is broken up into sections and each section is also shown how it may connect to the BC Core curriculum.

The creation of the Expanded Core Curriculum was a project developed by the TDHH Mentorship group in 2022 – 2024. The group collected DHH expanded curriculum documents from APSEA (Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority), Ontario Resource Guide Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Minnesota Social Skills Checklist for Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. They also collected feedback from PRP-AO (Provincial Resource Program- Auditory Outreach), UBC’s Deaf Education department and countless Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing working through the province.
