POPDHH on the Road

October 30th – Southeast Kootenay – contribution by Karina, Grade 8 student

A group of students from School District #5 got together on October 30 to eat lunch, learn some Halloween signs and decorate cookies for the Halloween season.
Events like this help build relationships between DHH students/kids. We would like to thank POPDHH for helping make this possible and shout out to David for teaching us some spooky signs!

November 17th – South Vancouver Island – contribution by Shannon Davenport, Saanich TDHH

Dear POPDHH, thank you for coming to Saanich for a GREAT ASL Activity Day! The kids had lots of fun and learned a lot. We had students from Saanich (SD63), Victoria (SD61), Sooke (SD62) and multiple independent schools. There were 32 students in total ranging in age from Kindergarten to grade 5. There were lots of adults there too— TDHHs, VLIs, LASW, EAs and administrators. We had a yummy pizza lunch after all the activities. We can’t wait for the next event!

November 18th – Central Vancouver Island – contribution by Katelin Miller, Comox Valley TDHH

Each year, students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Parksville, and Gold River come together for a special DHH Day hosted by the Provincial Outreach Program: Deaf and Hard of Hearing (POPDHH). This event gives students the opportunity to learn and practice American Sign Language (ASL) in a fun, supportive environment while connecting with peers who share similar experiences.
DHH Day is more than just a learning opportunity—it’s a chance for students to see Deaf role models, explore their identity, and build confidence. Students quickly form friendships, sharing laughter and experiences that help them feel seen, understood, and empowered. These connections are so meaningful that students eagerly look forward to monthly DHH gatherings throughout the year.
The students and teachers from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Parksville and Gold River school districts would like to send A heartfelt thank you to everyone who makes DHH Days possible: the educators, support staff, and families who help bring students together, and to POPDHH for providing expert instruction and mentorship. Your support helps create an inclusive community where students who are DHH can thrive, celebrate their identity, and develop lifelong friendships.  We would like to extend a special thank you to Dana Zimmer and David McGregor. Their knowledge, cultural insight, personal stories, and boundless energy made this DHH Day truly unforgettable!
